Learn to Read Symbols

If you do, then a whole new world of patterns open up for you. These symbols are international, so if you get a pattern from Japan or Russia, no problem with the language. I took Crochet Your Way out at my local library, so I know that it is excellant. In fact I am buying it soon. This other one says that the patterns are all done in
symbols. Go here to see the site.

Here is a Crochet Terms Conversion Chart. You can also play with the mouse there, lol. You'll see when you get there. For very bored people or someone who maybe needs a break from the ongoing project? All in all, I had an interesting visit to Nazumi World.com. Then I came across Grannys-Garret symbol crochet page (among other of her pages. Stitch Painter Crochet Symbols is one of the most different and interesting programs that I have run across yet to help the crochet designer that wishes to work in symbols. I found that at Cochenille design studio along with the demos to download (the programs, yes, multiple programs, videos, clip art. I found the What's New area while looking around again just now. Wow. Really worth looking at. I plan to get the My Inspiration Files shown on that page. Here is a blurb about it: " My Inspiration Files is a database tool designed to keep track of your fashion and craft Inspirations by organizing and storing your favorite images and information into one simple-to-use tool. Have fun building an electronic scrapbook loaded with hundreds of entries of images that inspire you. Capture graphics from the web, your digital camera or scan clippings from magazines.
Quickly sort through years of entries with a keyword search. Includes a Starter Set of over 150 annotated Fashion or Apparel and Related Websites. Simply click on the link and away you go! Web List view." It's only $35 on special marked down and with free shipping. Thank goodness, cuz I really want it! I guess you can all tell I am really jazzed about this website. The main idea here is that if you are a designer and don't know about this I really wanted to share it with you. The next program I ran across is called SymblCro. They are calling it a demo version, but since they want feedback it seems more of a beta to me while reading the page the name links to. Here is the home page. I plan on trying this for making small, round thread doilies to work together to make the Long Lacy Cardigan (looks more like a duster to me) from the book I got at Crafters Choice called So Simple Crochet. I was thinking of making the front only waist length and then the back down to my calves. Should look interesting (??) Hope so, lol. I managed to find ONE online site for symbol crochet patterns. The English patterns are here at Garnstudio & Drops Designs . I found an English-Norska-Danska-Svenska-Spanish-French-Tyska-Finska translation page of regularly used crochet words, so if you want to try a pattern from one of those languages-go for it! Make sure to click on the diagram picture that you see on the English pattern pages, the logo looks the same in @ language. Here also is a chart in both Dutch (?) to English of the symbols they are using:

For those of you in warm places:
Try Jessi's Hearts in a Row Scarf made with crochet cotton using red for the hearts! I made some of these last Christmas for my adult girls (oops, my age is showing!) and they love them. As soon as I get my latest 3 WIP'S done I plan on hauling out my crochet cotton of many colors and getting on some of these to put aside for when the snow melts. I know many of you live where you have nice, warm weather now, so don't think you can't have a nice, skinny, fashionable scarf or two, yes, I dislike you all right now (just kidding). Have fun!

"Sweet Rosey" Bookmark
copywrite (c) Joyce A. Hodnett-Oct 2003

This is Joyce's original design for my “Sweet Rosey Bookmark” in Filet Crochet. When making with size #10 thread and a #7 hook, it should measure 3.9” wide X 10.5” tall when finished.
Using my chart below and starting at the bottom right of pattern, chain 52. Chain an additional 3 to turn which will count as the first double crochet of the first row. Double crochet in the 5th chain from hook. Double crochet in the next 2 chains to complete bottom right solid square of pattern. Continue following pattern for first row reading pattern right to left. After completing first row, chain 3 to turn to start next row. Continue following the pattern until all rows are complete. At the end of row 42, fasten off. You may add a tassle and block, if desired.

I feel an apology is in order to Kim
I put up her blog logo as a link (I thought) about 3 weeks ago here on my site. Well, the other night I wanted to go there (Crochet Me) having finally finished the work on my 2006 Crochet Olympics poncho. So, I clicked on it and lo and behold-it took me right back here! Oh how red in the face I was. Of course I contacted her to find out how to fix this problem and then find out I took her site logo and NOT the correct button link, oh geez. Really got embarrassed. So she sent me the right button and after getting into my template and fiddling with it for awhile I finally fixed it up. So now, so sorry Kim, and as for the rest of my audience-please click the new button on the right in my links area & check out her blog!

Got this darned cap done!
Worked so hard on a pattern I didn't understand, so gave up and kind of made up my own pattern. Started out with another, I thought, easy one, but it was turning out to be too, too small, lol. So just made it up as I went. So here is my treble, slanted v stitch cap. Somehow the warmest part goes around the ears. Yippie!

Slanted V Stitch-How to

Wanted to share this stitch since it came out so nice on the poncho and would make a great stitch for a shawl, scarf, etc. If you click on link you will need to do a search in their box for the slanted v stitch.

Multiple of 4+1

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and @ ch across

Row 2: ch1, (sc, ch1, dc) sv made- in 1st stitch, (skip next 2 stitches, sv in next stitch) across to last 3 stitches, skip next 2, hdc in last stitch, ch1, turn.

Row 3 on: sv in @ ch-1 space across, hdc in turning ch of previous row. ch1, turn.

Just look at this!
I finally got started with my poncho for the 2006 Crochet Olympics and now I keep wondering what the award will be!Or what the prize might be, hmmm. Haven't gotten too far, but will be staying up late working on playing catch up. Here is what I have done so far and a close-up of the detail of the stitch (slanted v):

What I really hope is that I can get this done by 2/26! Winning would be nice, too, lol. (BTW-it took so long to upload these pictures that I have twice as much done on my piece!)

It's time!

The 2006 Crochet Olympics has started for the West Coast at 11am and I will be setting aside the shrug to immerse myself in working up the poncho I have decided on making. I will double check but I think I have 6 days (and nights, tee-hee) to work this up. I am still deciding on whether or not to use the pattern stitch called for in the original pattern or to use a different stitch, one that is tighter and will therefore make a warmer poncho. As I work on this piece I will stop now and then and take pictures of it's progress and come here to post them. I may make a new photo album just for this purpose.
Gotta run and get my fingers flying.

WIP of the Week

Just started on this shell bordered shrug from a new book I got in the mail. Making it from Scheepjes Domino yarn (50% cotton/50% acrylic) a yarn from Holland I found a batch of in a thrift store. I really like the way it works up so far. An interesting pattern, you make the edge of the sleeve first then turn and work up the sleeve. Haven't gotten too far so I don't know if I will run into any problems understanding the pattern. Hopefully will have it done by end of week and can post the picture of it.

How my WIP (work in progress) turned out

Last week I started Berroco's pattern for
their Hudson poncho. Got done over the
weekend. Wow, I love it. As you can see mine came out way
shorter, but I really like it that way, I think it gives it a kind of
"funky" look. Lol. I plan on making another one in turquoise and will probably make it so that it comes out like the one on their website as shown on picture on left (click on link to get the free pattern) just to see if I like it. I will do a drape on myself before I get too far into it to see if I think I will like it at that length or not. There is alot of freedom to the real short sleeve on the right while working on my crochet.
For the 2006 Crochet Olympics I am going to attempt to make it in #10 crochet cotton so I have one for the summer. I just hope that I can get it done in the time allotted since working in that medium I know it won't go as fast. I may use two threads together for an interesting look and a different pattern stitch also. Two threads would make it sturdier too I think. What I would like to do is a "heather" pattern if I can find one.
